Bumper August Summer Selection...Village Haberdashery, Eternal Maker and Plush Addict

I'm combining posts for this month's sponsor visits as I'm enjoying the last couple of weeks of the summer holidays with family.  All my choices are inspired by that last blast of summer feeling that comes just before the season turns.. we just need the weather to get the memo and heat up a little in the UK!

Village Haberdashery

1. Menagerie by Anna Rifle for Cotton+Steel. The Rifle collections go from strength to strength and Menagerie looks amazing. There's a couple of stand out prints for me, Watercolour in Multi and Jardin De Paris in Peony (my favourite ever Rifle print) but that's just personal taste, they are all glorious. There is the usual range of substrates (quilting cotton, rayon, canvas and a new rayon/cotton lawn) and although they are as yet a pre-order purchase, Annie has mentioned they are due in any time now...
2. Lady McElroy Lawns.  Annies stocks an amazing selection of these soft cotton lawns with prints from small floral to large tropical fronds.
3. Plant Lady Fabric Selection. A fantastic selection of prints reflecting such a popular trend in clothing and interiors.

Eternal Maker

1. Arroyo by Erin Dollar for Robert Kaufman. Simple mark making prints on a classic Essex linen base. They have that effortless modern look that's perfect for bags, cushions and quilts.  These are just the neutral tones, there are more soft pastel and light colours. My personal favourite is Sprinkles in Pickle; great colour and I love the name!
2. Chambray Double Gauze by Robert Kaufman.  I love chambray, I love double gauze and I love blue so this is fabric perfection for me.  It's wide 146cm/56" and has a slight lovely variable colour.  Double gauze works well in simple shapes and for those times in Autumn when it's cold early morning and warm by lunch time, it is the ideal fabric choice!
3. Jumbo Plaid from Hometown Christmas by Sweetwater for Moda in Ivory, Mint, Olive, Red.  Christmas fabric with year round appeal!

Plush Addict

1. Dashwood Studio Copenhagen by Jilly Philips.  Florals, birds and butterflies in china blue colours, reminiscent of ceramic designs.
2. Hobbs Precut wadding.  On offer with 15% off until 27th August. Time to stock up on essential supplies...
3. Riley Blake Bee Backgrounds. Lori Holt's new quilting low volume collection comes in cold, warm and neutral and is available in bundles and yardage.

July at Village Haberdashery

Time to visit sponsor Village Haberdashery for the latest arrivals...I've focused on some dressmaking and quilting options using the latest fabrics and patterns, plus I've selected three double gauze prints as it's a lovely fabric for summer dressmaking or summer quilts.

Dressmaking

I've chosen a freshly released dress pattern and fabrics that will work with that pattern.

May at Village Haberdashery

Time for my May visit to Village Haberdashery and Annie's been making some exciting announcements including a visit from quilting royalty, Anna Maria Horner in August and some classes that she'll be running at the shop:

Clockwise from top left:

1. A choice of classes with Anna Maria Horner, Folk Flower Block, Travelling Blooms Quilt or Inspiration by Hand.  Something for all tastes, reverse appliqué, colour, embroidery and hand sewing work. 
2. Etta Dress by Tilly and the Buttons.  Tilly Walnes newest pattern, a fitted dress, lots of dart shaping and optional details.  The construction looks interesting, I enjoyed seeing the inside of the sleeve with its bias finish on Jane's version of Etta in this blog post. 
3. Wanderlust Tee by Fancy Tiger.  Easy fitting, boxy style T-shirt pattern with closer fit in the shoulders, flaring out to a slight A-line. 
4. Birdsong Collection by Joanne Cocker for Dashwood Studio.  This collection is everywhere at the moment and I'm not surprised, pretty muted colours and soft modern prints. 
5. Sleep Tight, Toys in Grey.  Sarah Watts for Cotton+Steel, part of a very cute, gender neutral nursery style collection.

February at Village Haberdashery

Exciting times at Village Haberdashery, the shop move has happened and the new shop is looking amazing!  It's a crafter's paradise with room for yarn, paper, stamps, embroidery supplies as well as fabric and patterns plus workshop space for classes or even to hire by the hour.  Quite the change from the original shop which was always packed with goodies but a little tight for space.  As usual, there's plenty of new arrivals too.  Here's my nine picks for February's sponsor post.

1. Art Gallery: Prickly Pear in Indigo from Sage Bari J.  Beautiful border print (also available in a  plummy Ruby colour).  Border printed along one selvedge, perfect for the simplest of dresses and skirts, plus you can see examples of clothing, bags and cushions to see the border displayed on the link.
2. Robert Kaufman Essex linen metallics in new shades, Copper, Dusty Rose and Water.
3. Robert Kaufman:Tree Stripe Border from Friedlander by Carolyn Friedlander.  Possibly her best collection yet with trees at the heart of her design inspiration. Quilting cotton.
4. Cotton Lawn Amaryllis.  Amazing floral print, on trend with the giant blooms and wide at 59". Maybe a good partner for the Melilot shirt?

January at Village Haberdashery

There's change afoot at Village Haberdashery as Annie is on the brink of moving into her new shop in West Hampstead, you can read about her updates here and admire the stunning decor - Rifle Paper Co lemon wall paper, swoon!  Meanwhile, stock continues to arrive and the existing shop and website are still very much open as usual and it's time for my monthly sponsor visit...

1. Frolic, Avila, Sarah York for Cloud9 Fabrics.   Painterly design on cotton batiste which is similar to cotton lawn in feel.  Annie has described this as slightly sheer so you do need to consider lining for some clothing, although it looks like the fabrics gather beautifully.  There are lots of garment pictures to see how it works in the links.
2. Sleeping Porch, Floral in Purple, Heather Ross for Windham Fabrics. Cotton lawn and perhaps the best purple fabric ever!

5. Merchant & Mills, Fielder Dress Top Pattern.  Based on a traditional sweatshirt shape with raglan sleeves.  I think it always helps to see other people's versions of patterns sewn up and this one of the top option in heavy white linen by Linda of Kettle Yarn Co is a beauty.
6. Cactus Party on black, Sevenberry.  Cute print on woven cotton.  Also in white.
7. Desert Bloom, Spring in Maize.  Lovely golden mixer print from this Moda quilting range.
8. Desert Bloom, Wildflower in Midnight, Sherri and Chelsi for Moda, gorgeous deep inky background on this floral print on quilting cotton. 
9. Sidewalk, Art Class in white, organic cotton interlock jersey by Rae Hoekstra for Cloud9.  Perfect for children's wear and more.

October at Villlage Haberdashery

Time for my monthly visit to Village Haberdashery and as always happens, as soon as I start to chose some fabrics from the newest arrival, a palette starts to form and a matching fabric selection appears. There's a mix of jersey, lawn, linen, chambray, yarn dyed broadcloth and quilting cottons, so something for everyone.

From left to right, row by row:

1. Nightfall, Lunation in Dark. by Maureen Cracknell for Art Gallery Fabrics.  Available as a super smooth quilting cotton and also in a wide width silky voile. 
2. Cloud9 Window Dressing and Checks Please.  Checks and plaids have been such a hit this year and that's no surprise as these yarn dyed cottons are truly versatile for quilting, clothing , bags and more.  The colours are bright and uplifting.  Personally, I think any of these would make amazing pyjamas.
3. Observer, Speck in Bronze, April Rhodes.   This is been promoted heavily at the moment, just before quilt market but there's no denying it's understated cool aesthetic.  It certainly looks great in clothingn and homewares.  Check out the lookbook and you'll see what I mean.  A hint of metallic on Art Gallery's lovely cotton base cloth
4. Chambray Boulevard prints, Robert Kaufman.  Southwest Stripe and pin dot, both printed on lightweight chambray, a good match for the Harrison Shirt pattern. 
5. The Harrison Shirt by Cashmerette. This classic shirt pattern was a year in the making and testing to get the fit just right.   It has double princess seams and is designed for curves, size range 12-28 and cup sizes C/D, E/F and G/H.  Jenny has released superb patterns since she launched her pattern brand a year ago.  The tester photos in her birthday blog post show why her designs have been successful. 
6. Observer Knit, Mesh with Me, April Rhodes.  Lovely inky irregular graphic print on cotton/lycra jersey.
7. Euclid, reflect in Natural,  printed Essex linen, Carolyn Friedlander for Robert Kaufman.  Gorgeous designs for clothes, bags and cushions.
8. Pixie Noel. Tasha Noel's Chrismtas quilting cottons for Riley Blake.  I find that most Christmas fabrics don't have the staying power for me, if they are going to appear each Christmas they need a timeless quality and these do.  These designs are pleasingly nostalgic and the colours are crisp and bright.
9. From Porto with Love lawn, Fishies in navy, Sarah Watts for Cotton +Steel.  I just love it, the pink line against the navy- perfection.   Another fabric suggestion for the Harrison shirt.

September at Village Haberdashery

We are getting a September burst of heat and summer in the UK - although it is a little patchy, but in the spirit of the last fling of summer which I think is coming next week, I've included a summery dress as well as something with longer sleeves thinking of cooler times coming for this month's Village Haberdashery sponsor post.

1. Sew Over it Rosie Dress.  The princess bodice has boned sides for a snug fit and a skirt variation is included with this pattern.  A good fit for the Art Gallery cottons or the Cotton + Steel Checkers if you were feeling a little bolder!

3. Raindrop Collection: In Bloom in Night by Rashida Coleman-Hale for Cotton + Steel.  My favourite print from Rashida's subtle Raindrop Collection.
4. Les Fleurs Collection by Rifle Paper Co. for Cotton + Steel.  This collection which includes rayon, lawn and canvas as well as quilting cottons, has proved incredibly popular with a second order already due.  I've bought a few of the quilting cottons, so hard to resist.
5. Joie de Vivre knits - Paradis in Sweet. Gorgeous painterly blooms from Bari J for Art Gallery on a cotton/spandex blend jersey.
6. Les Fleurs Collection by Rifle Paper Co. for Cotton + Steel.  This collection which includes rayon, lawn and canvas as well as quilting cottons, has proved incredibly popular with a second order already due.  I've bought a few of the quilting cottons, so hard to resist.
7. Cotton + Steel Checkers.  A new basics range from Cotton + Steel, yarn dyed ginghams in a range of sizes.  Annie has lots of the smaller ½" colours in stock plus some jumbo 1" and 2.5" checks.  Suitable for clothing and apparel.  Yarn dyed cottons tend to have better drape than printed quilting cottons.  I love them for shirt dresses.
8. Playground, Amy Sinibaldi for Art Gallery.  Amy's second range for Art Gallery.  A mix of substrates including voile  (which has a clever print which I think works both ways vertically, more ecumenical for dress making) plus a knit.  My favourite is the Hopscotch Jump grid/check which reminds me of a Scrabble board. 
9. Merchant & Mills Rugby Dress.  A good transitional style with long sleeves, collar, placket and cuffs.  This could easily be shortened to tunic or pullover shirt length.

August at Village Haberdashery

As usual, Village Haberdashery has had a tonne of new arrivals this month so I've picked nine of the new fabrics and patterns and I've included some stacks to get the most into my August sponsor selection.

1. Robert Kaufman Essex yarn dyed linen with metallic.    This is a lovely fabric which has a little structure and body.  I've got some sample squares from this range and it glimmers!   I thought this might be a little scratch with 10% lurex but no it just feels like linen/cotton blend See all the available colours here.
2. Mona Luna Wanderlust-  the luxury of an organic cotton lawn collection.  Lawn would be a  good fabric for the Megan Nielsen Sudley pattern.
3. Megan Nielsen Harper Shorts and Sudley top.  Two of Megan's newer patterns, both come with extra options, a skort with the shorts which are fully lined by the way- nice touch- and would be great with the Essex dyed linen metallic, and the Sudley is also a dress with collar variation.
4. Bari J for Art Gallery, Joie de Vivre Collection.  A painterly modern floral collection including quilting cotton, canvas and voile- a knit jersey is on the way too
5. Great British Sewing Bee book 'From Stitch to Style,' by Wendy Gardiner, signed by the very worthy winner, Charlotte Newline!
6. Magic by Sarah Jane for Michael Miller.  Mermaids, Unicorns and metallics.  Mix of patterns including a stunning border print.
7. Deer and Doe patterns.  French stylish dressmaking patterns for women- all translated into English- are now available to buy online.   I rather like the Lupin jacket which would be another suitable pattern for the Essex metallic linen and I would line it too.
8. Mona Luna Wanderlust Lawn- Sky.  Gorgeous abstract water colour style print on cotton lawn.
9. Chloe's Closet for Moda, Sew and Sew. Beautiful nostalgic florals on quilting cotton. Doopsey Daisy in Orange Fizz and Garden in Orange Fizz with Whip Cream, great names.

June at Village Haberdashery

Lots of Nani Iro fabrics arrived at Village Haberdashery for my June sponsor visit.  I'll admit, I was quick to order some in and lots of you had the same idea as the website was under strain with those initial burst of purchases!   Here is my June selection, a mix of double gauze, interlock knits, canvas, quilting cotton, yarn dyed cotton and a pattern!

From left to right:

1.  Marianne Dress: Adaptable pattern for knits from Christine Haynes.  This style would work very well with the striped interlock knits (see number 8) as they have a bit of weight to them and is a relatively easy sew too.

2.  French Bulldogs, in bow ties, blue Cotton/linen blend canvas by Cosmo good for bags, cushions and more.

3.  Pocho Imataria- double gauze. Shimmery soft metallic dashes.  Double gauze makes wonderful 

casual garments, baby clothes and lightweight blankets.

4.  Dapper Wovens Check is in the Mail in Wine Stain by Luke Haynes of @entropies - Yarn dyed fabric so the check is created by two different colour threads and the way they are woven rather than printed on to a blank base.  Very soft, tactile fabric for quilting and clothes inspired by the reclaimed textiles in Luke's quilts.  Gorgeous colour selection too!

5.   Nani Iro Canvas, Beautiful Life in Fairy Tale, incredible Naomi Ito design on linen/cotton canvas for Kokka.  Good for bags, cushions etc, but I think I would be tempted to buy this and staple it onto a big canvas to make amazing wall art!  The high contrast would make it perfect for a neutral colour baby room or play space.

6. Nani Iro Fuwari Fuwari in Violet Field, a reissue of a classic Naomi Ito design,  Fuwari means 'float' in japanese, so imagine a multitude of floating violet, blue and yellow petals.  This design was used by Karyn of Make Something to create the most wonderful blouse a few years back, one of my favourite double gauze inspiration makes and a perfect example of a style that works well in double gauze.

7.  Purebred Preakness in Black.  Classic colour by numbers design on quilting cotton by Erin Michael.  Other prints in the Purebred range can be found here (some are discounted!).

8.  Striped Interlock knits. Great quality heavy weight jersey.  All cotton, good amount of stretch.  Interlock is a more stable form of cotton jersey- the edges stay flat rather than curling up when cutting. 160cm wide.  There are also plain interlock knits, good for contrast or colour blocking as in the Marianne dress- the link will take you to all the interlock jersey fabrics from the same manufacturer.  

9.  Loominous: Illuminated graph in metalic cream.  Another soft yarn dyed fabric, metallic threads contrasting with cream from Anna Maria Horner- great for clothing and quilts and this particular fabric would make a gorgeous summer scarf to protect shoulders, neck and chest on hot sunny days- there's a free tutorial here for a loop scarf or I have a free tutorial for an simple rectangular scarf here- it only needs a metre of material!

May at Village Haberdashery

May is a time of mixed weather in the UK and I think this is reflected in my monthly choices for one of my sponsors, Village Haberdashery.  Sunshine, flowers, showers- they are all in there along with a range of substrates including bark cloth, dobby cotton, brushed cotton and knit for quilting, crafts and dressmaking.

1. Greatest Adventure- Clouds in navy, cute print with an outdoors/weather theme- I've mentioned before how rain related prints are very popular this year!  I like the colours in this collection. See related prints here. 
2. Valencia- Colour play in orange, by Laura Gunn.  Pretty and vibrant water colour print on quilting cotton.  This reminds me of early 1960s dress fabrics. 
3. Sailor's Dobby- Double dot in navy.  Lightweight cotton dressmaking fabric from Robert Kaufmann.    The dots are woven into the weave.  Love the nautical feel to this and there is a much lighter colourway here. 
4. In Theory Zenith in Gold- gorgeous barkcloth fabric from Cloud 9.  Great weight for skirts and jackets.
5. Cotton Candy Collection by Susan Driscoll for Dashwood Studio.  Delicious colour palette and lively mix of florals and geometrics.  A very strong collection from the dynamic Dashwood Studio.
6. Succulence cotton/lycra knit by Bonnie Christine for Art Gallery.  See this fabric in a Tilly & the Buttons Agnes top in the Art Gallery look book, page 25!
7. Lore- Olympus in Navy by Leah Duncan for Cloud 9.  Organic cotton and a folkloric inspired but modern looking design. 
8. Nani Iro- Fuccra in Rakuen,  Brushed Cotton.  Stunning print from Naomi Ito for Nani Iro on a soft cotton base cloth.  Perfect for lounging clothes or even luxurious pyjamas. 
9. Momo, Flying Colours- Raindrops in Sky.  Cute mixer style rain print from Momo for Moda.

April at Village Haberdashery

Finally a bit of sun here in Devon and my thoughts can legitimately turn to dresses, short sleeve tops and warmer weather.  There are some lovely light and bright arrivals at Village Haberdashery this month- Annie makes my job so easy!  Here are my nine top picks for April...

1.  Linen/cotton Herringbone Weave Chambray, wide width at 59" and beautiful for garment making (see 'Skipper' dress below) or an informal bag like the Grainline Stowe. 

2.  Mendoccino by Heather Ross  has arrived and the Underwater sisters mermaid print is swimming out of the shop (see what I did there ;).  Available in gold, pink on cream, dark pink and plum as well as blue on blush and the other Mendocino prints can be seen here whilst stocks last. 

3.   'Manu Forest' organic cotton voile (44" wide) from the stunning range of Yucca fabrics designed by Leah Duncan for Cloud 9.  Amazing colours. 

4.  Leaping Foxes by Joanne Cocker for Dashwood.  From Fablewood, a promising debut collection with lovely fresh colours.

5.  Merchant & Mills 'The Skipper'.  Classic sailor dress pattern designed for 3-8 year olds. Ideal for chambrays, linens and would also work with Art Gallery cottons  or Cloud 9 Organics as they are both so soft silky to work with. 

6. Rainbows in Aqua from the Flying Colours collection by Momo.  Typical psychedelic style from Momo, I really like the flower power print and the Rainbow Forest from the same range. 

7. Ladies Night (Metallic).  Irresistible print by Sarah Watts for the Cotton+Steel Black & White 2016 collection.

8.  Lore-Up Above the Clouds in Multi.  More stunning designs from Leah Duncan for Cloud 9, this time from the Lore collection.  If you prefer a quieter print, check out Lore- Fable Forest, a soft subtle design. 

9.  Cotton/Spandex denim- Rushton.  A bit of stretch so maybe this would be good for a pair of Ginger jeans or an Airelle Skirt?

Nine Patch: March at Village Haberdashery

I thought I'd try a new presentational style for my monthly sponsor posts to make them a bit punchier - blog reading is definitely a faster activity for many.  I'm picking nine items from each shop, making a nine-patch style image and then listing details below for those that want to follow up on additional information, links etc.  I'm starting with Village Haberdashery...

1.  Dritz Ezy-Hem Gauge:  a great piece of kit for dressmakers or anyone who regular needs to turn a hem to a specific length.  It's a metal gauge on which fabric is folded and presses to the desired hem size.  It has curved and straight edges as well as metric and imperial measurements.  First time I've seen them on sale in UK, I had to get mine from a friend in USA. 

2.  In Theory Wavelength in Gold: one of the new prints from the In Theory organic barkcloth fabric range from Jessica Jones. The weight is heavy, like curtains but it also has a softness so it's good for interiors (curtains/cushions) or clothing with structure (jackets/dresses/skirts).  I plan to make a sticky out A-line skirt with pockets.  This seems to be the hottest print.  Find others here. 

3.  Riley Blake, Farm Girl Cherry Pie: I love cherries and so it's hard to resist the cherry print. 

4.  Hokkoh, Linen Trees in Mustard and Pink: a cotton/linen blend, good for bags and cushions. 

5.  Washi Tape-Ruler.  There's a tape section in the new Craft Supplies department.  I love sewing 

themed washi tape, perfect for destash parcels!  This is one of my favourites. 

6.  Pikku Saari- Saaristo in Lemon: larger scale pattern on cotton/linen blend.  Other gorgeous prints from same company here.  

7.  Park Life Hyde Park in Multi- Elizabeth Olwen for Cloud 9.  Pretty floral/nature painterly collections  all featuring swans seem to be multiplying at the moment- see Sommer, Spring Walk and  the forthcoming Swan Lake.  I can't help but fall for them all!  The Full collection of Park Life can be found here. 

8.  Muddy Works-Eucalyptus in Mustard: gorgeous floral print on a soft drapey cotton sateen, perfect dressmaking fabric. 

9.  Olfa Self Healing Cutting Mat, 18" x 24" (metric on reverse). Cutting mats are usually a green colour, who wouldn't love a pink one? 

February at Village Haberdashery

There seem to be a flurry of floral themed fabric arrivals at Village Haberdashery so I'm starting February's visit with a look at some glorious colours and flowers, starting with Sarah Jane's Sommer range for Michael Miller.

It's hard to pick favourites, it is such a vibrant and uplifting collection of painterly prints.

Aneela Hooey's first collection for Cloud 9 fabrics, Vignette, is full of florals and includes double gauze as well as quilting cottons.

For dressmakers, the big plus on the double gauze is that the Petal and Floret prints are multi directional which makes fabric usage a bit more economical. 

The newest Cotton+Steel collections have been some of my favourites ever.  I like the way each new set of designs echo something from the last whilst pushing the designs forward.  This is Melody Miller's Fruit Dots range, a delicious mix of themes, colours and prints.

The Bluebird range is amazing too.   I know the Black and White range has been popular but I find the monochrome look a little stark but the blues in all their different shades are stunning. 

Other companies are catching on to the blue trend, Michael Miller have an Indigo range.

Also fresh in the shop are Heather Lou's Closet Case patterns, including the hugely popular Ginger jeans:

These patterns offer a great set of capsule shapes-  Ginger jeans, Nettie top/dress,  Clare coat and Carolyn PJ's- any sew alongs for the styles are included each pattern link!
