Picture Books

We are all big fans of picture books in our house.  When my daughter was young Damian and I would pour over books bought solely for their illustrations to read to Lula, many of which we kept as I couldn't bear to pat with them and all the memories they hold.  Each Christmas we seem to add a picture book or two,  (I think this was last year's purchase) and this year we discovered a couple of beauties.
The Fir Tree, Sanna Annuka
It is a typical Hans Christian Anderson sad and sorry moral tale with breath taking pictures. Sanna Annuka is a English/Finnish print designer who works for Marimekko as well as producing her own products.
The shapes, colours and tessellation's are a delight, every page is a quilter's inspiration.

The sun is possibly my favourite.

Damian found this book.  He is a big fab of creative paper cutting as well as fairy tales.
The Fairy Tale Princess
It is the newsprint that really grabs me and excites me in these pictures.  The princess and the pea is a treat.
 The Dancing Princesses...

 Sleeping Beauty...
Both are a pleasure to read, you are never too old for a picture book.

  1. We love picture books as well in our house and my daughter is 14! That Sun is amazing and inspiring. An equilateral triangle quilt is on ny list for this year, yet I didn't want to do the same thing as everyone else (I don't like to jump on bandwagons). I may have to spend some time at the drawing board to figure a center medallion design out. :) Thank you for sharing!

  2. Wow! Thanks for sharing! I was so sad when my boys outgrew picture books. I could look at them all day! I saved some of MY favorites. The art work in them is often breathtaking. I may have to look these up and get copies of my own, or to share with my little nieces and nephews!

  5. Oh, those are both gorgeous! I love picture books too. I am happy to see that my nearly 10 year old still chooses some at the library along with his chapter books.

  8. wow those are some books. That used to be my favorite thing at Chanukah and going on holiday. I always bought my children exquisite pop-up books for those times of the year. I loved books then and still do now. I buy my grandchildren books.

  10. I don't know about you, but I see a lot of inspiration in those books that could be transferred to quilting as well!

  12. thank you so much for sharing these beautiful books, Kerry. I have now bought the Fairytale Princess book online, and popped back to say thank you for letting us know it exists!!

The Hans Christian Anderson book looks beautiful too, such gorgeous images. My girls love the Sisters Grimm series, and we have been lucky enough to visit the HCA statue in Central Park, NYC, which has a very important role in one of the books.

After your last post, about Lula and her love sushi/bento, I was prompted to buy a couple of small bento items for my girls too, for their lunchboxes when school starts again. take care, Catherine

  15. That papercut book is amazing - I went right to amazon and ordered it! Love picture books to read to the grandkids, now that they are old enough to sit through them. Nothing quite like cuddling up with a warm child and a blanket for a nice read!
