I chose this block of the month because I wanted to improve my appliqué skills- all the picture motifs are needle turn appliqué and I loved how Sarah's design made the whole quilt sing rather than focusing on a centre and working outwards. I had a clear vision for this when I started but it is so much more impactful than I ever imagined! It was quilted by <a href="https://trudi-quiltingprolifically.blogspot.com" target="_blank">Trudi Wood</a> and she painstakingly freehand quilted around every animal and motif and added some gentle geometric shapes around the framing shapes. I had a commission which I'm currently working on- can't show that I'm afraid- but I can show you the FPP pattern I've designed especially for an online interactive<a href="https://www.craftymonkies.com/" target="_blank"> CraftyMonkies class</a>. <div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The pattern is for a mug rug. There's a choice of mugs- plain or striped, and choice of text and these reflect easier and harder skills that I'll cover in class along with sharing as many paper-piecing tips as I can in the three-hour class! If you're tempted to join in, you will be very welcome. The class runs on Saturday 8th August, 10-1pm BST and bookings are welcome from anywhere in the world, find all the<a href="https://www.craftymonkies.com/online-workshops-sewing-quilting" target="_blank"> details here</a>, scroll down. </div>

If you are a first-time Zoom class participant, don't panic! CraftyMonkies classes have an experienced host, Rachel, who settles you into class, sorts out technical niggles and controls sound and vision! This means that everyone gets their chance to interact without being talked over and to ask the question you really want to ask You 'll be able to have a close view of my hands, cutting mat and sewing machine presser foot so you can see <i>exactly w</i>hat I am doing. It's a gentle, happy sociable experience too. I'm really missing my sewing meet-ups at the moment and an interactive Zoom class like this is a great replacement. </div>

It's been a while. Lockdown life is busy. I've been doing lots of crafty social media for others and that doesn't leave me much time for my own! Plus we've had our daughter sitting exams in the house and all of us working from home. We're all safe and well, just missing our usual social activities and the family members we can't see, but thankful for the ones who live close by and doorstep socially distant chats! Joni is living her best life with everyone at home and even Buffy, our cat is enjoying the extra company. In May I managed to make a few garments I'm yet to share here so time to catch up!<br />

<a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2020/03/yay-trousers-at-last-m7455-palmer.html" target="_blank">I liked my M7445 wide leg denim trousers </a>so much I made another pair. This time in a gorgeous navy twill from <a href="https://clothspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Clothspot</a> called <a href="https://clothspot.co.uk/product/salthouse-dark-navy-blue-cotton-twill-fabric/" target="_blank">Salthouse</a>. It's the most wonderful quality- deadstock from a top UK designer (think suits and multi-coloured stripes), a deep dark colour and has a little bit of ease so it worked beautifully for this pattern. I did the same sizing and mods as my denim pair. The hem was sewn by using a herringbone stitch which is a great stitch for a flat hem that you won't catch as your feet go through the trouser legs. M7445 such a great pattern, a real shame that it's recently discontinued, it's worth tracking down on eBay or Etsy.</div>

The hem was sewn by using a <a href="https://youtu.be/JWY8xwNUNPE" target="_blank">herringbone/catch stitch</a> which is a great option for a flat hem that you won't catch as your feet go through the trouser legs and the stitches hardly show on the right side of the fabric. M7445 such a great pattern, a real shame that it's recently discontinued, it's worth tracking down on eBay or Etsy.</div>

Where are we now? Many weeks into lockdown, a slight easing of restrictions in the UK but for our household, little has changed. We are mainly staying in. Husband is working from home, daughter is studying and taking University exams at home, I am also working from home too working on social media stuff for gorgeous fabric store <a href="http://clothspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Clothspot</a> and also for a new venture, <a href="https://www.craftymonkies.com/" target="_blank">CraftyMonkies</a> & their online crafty workshops (including <a href="https://www.craftymonkies.com/online-workshops-sewing-and-quiltin" target="_blank">sewing, quilting</a>, <a href="https://www.craftymonkies.com/online-workshops-papercraft-scrapbo" target="_blank">papercraft</a> and <a href="https://www.craftymonkies.com/online-workshops-screenprinting" target="_blank">screenprinting!</a>) and lots of sewing. </div>

Twins were born in my husbands family just before all the crazy COVID stuff began so these quilts were started mid-March, and finished a few week's later. I used a pattern in <a href="https://www.fatquartershop.com/spelling-bee-book-lori-holt" target="_blank">Lori Holt's Spelling Bee book </a>and stash fabrics. I added a couple of teal/turquoise prints bought at the last meet-up I went to in March. I wanted some subtle colour differences between the two but also a pair. They are now with the new arrivals who are doing well. It may be quite a while until we can see them in person but we catch up with their progress via photos and videos, they are unbelievably cute!</div>

Last night I started a mental list of all the stuff I'd sewed since my day job stopped and we started living life at home. My hands were aching yesterday, a bit overstrained and as I totted up my makes, I'm not surprised. I do tend to throw myself into something in a stressful situation, often with a high degree on intensity. This has been one of those times. Part of me loves the time stretching ahead. I've made so many things I've wanted to make for years. My fabric and thread stores have provided all I've needed and my wardrobe is getting refreshed- I'll share all the makes once I get myself photographed. And then there are the obligatory masks - mainly for others, I try to avoid situations where I would need to wear one. I've used lawn and poplin, including Liberty to concentrate on comfort to encourage the wearer to keep it on when required. These ones are using <a href="http://thehappyzombie.com/pdf/hz_mask.pdf" target="_blank">Monica's Happy Zombie pattern</a>. I've made some others mixing this pattern with the <a href="https://dhuratadavies.com/blogs/things-i-make-and-do/free-face-mask-pattern-and-tutorial" target="_blank">Dhurata Davies Mask</a>. I like a mask with some shaping- both these patterns use darts, and they both avoid a centre seam. </div>

Spring has been spectacular. In our daily walks, we've seen so much beauty. Our little city is so quiet right now and the pathways are often less frequented than the parks and open spaces so we've seen many beautiful sights, often unexpected. Most of the time, I try not to think far ahead, just concentrate on the day we are in and enjoy it. The time together has been a treasure and I feel very lucky. But I won't lie, some days I'm flat, tired, worried, scared and on those days I hide away, sleep the time off if I can. Then the feeling subsides, I make stuff, work, cook, garden (not this one, ours is a tiny courtyard), walk Joni and repeat. I try not to dwell, just keep on keeping on and looking for the positives.</div>

<a href="https://wendyward.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Wendy Ward </a>is one of the most reliable voices in sewing today. She released <a href="https://www.miycollection.com/products/sewing-basics-for-every-body-by-wendy-ward-pre-order" target="_blank">Sewing Basics for Everybody</a> earlier this year and the <a href="https://wendyward.wordpress.com/2020/04/22/sewing-basics-for-every-body-blog-tour/#more-6877" target="_blank">blog hop promo tour is currently active</a>. I wasn't able to take part this time as I had work commitments scheduled at this time (that was back in the pre lockdown life!) but I did very kindly receive a copy to review. I find that with each of Wendy's books, the style gets closer to her true aesthetic and this book really feels like her functional style has been given the freedom to create a modern utilitarian capsule wardrobe. The keyword in the title is 'Every': this book is based on five core basic patterns with full variations and instructions to make twenty different designs in woven and knitted fabrics for any gender, age or body shape.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The book is divided into two main parts: Techniques and Projects. In the first section, there's lots of detailed information in writing, diagrams and tables. It's packed with a comprehensive range of tutorials that cover the key skills throughout the book from adding a bust dart to, sewing welt pockets, and even stencil painting. Then the main part of the book concentrates on the projects with a chunky chapter (including variations) devoted to each of the five core patterns. These sections are photo-heavy and feature a diverse range of models- different genders, ages etc. The photos are crisp and concentrate on cropped close-ups of the garments. </div>

The 'Harper' pants stood out to me as a classic slouchy pant. They reminded me of how I started sewing garments in my teens. I would take my dad's old discarded trousers and pleat the waist and peg the legs until they fitted teenage-me (we're talking circa 1985). I have photographic evidence somewhere! I really like the pleated hem detail (far right purple pants) to narrow the leg. </div>

As with Wendy's other books, there are full-size pattern pieces to trace off (some pieces need to be traced off more than one sheet) at the back of the book. As ever with Wendy, these are garments designed to be sewn on a regular domestic sewing machine and her attention to detail with plackets. cuffs, pockets, zips, linings and more will either teach you new skills or brush up your existing ones</div>

I made the first last summer as a test piece with some left-over navy double gauze (from <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2016/07/maritime-knit-top-three-ways-fumeterre.html" target="_blank">this skirt)</a> I chose the short sleeve version and the end result was meh. A boxy, non-descript top that I wore when I couldn't find anything else to work but a bit too boxy, the neck looked too wide and the overall look looked big rather than oversized. I did like some of the details - the back shoulders have an interesting extra section- so I resolved to try the more dramatic long sleeve version with another fabric. Here it is and I love it!</div>

This is a size 3 made in cotton crepe from my stash, several years old and a good weight and drape for this top. I did attempt the full lantern sleeve but it looked better without the low cuff sections. I did make a change to this version, I took 1/4" off the centre front and centre back of the bodice pattern pieces. this makes a 1" reduction to the diameter of the top and works better on my frame. There's a boxy quality but it's slightly more fitted. It's an adjustment I've used a few times- <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2017/09/merchant-mills-camber-dress-in-nani-iro.html" target="_blank">here on the Merchant and Mills Camber Dress</a>, and <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2015/03/liberty-hello-kitty-kanerva-blouse.html" target="_blank">here on my second Named Clothing Kanerva top</a>. The only other change was adding a high back adjustment. The sleeve and bodice hems are overlocked and turned up by 1/2". I used the bias binding finish on the neck.</div>

It's a top that definitely benefits from the right fabric choice. I do have some viscose crepe with a similar weight to this and I'm tempted to try a dress version mashing the full elbow-length sleeve top with the lower half of the <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2020/01/fibre-mood-holly-dress-in-liberty-crepe.html" target="_blank">Fibremood Holly dress,</a> complete with a tie. We'll see if that happens anytime soon! I'm finding that my concentration is leading to mistakes with my lockdown sewing projects. </div>

When <a href="https://www.marillawalkerpatterns.com/" target="_blank">Marilla Walker</a> released her <a href="https://www.marillawalkerpatterns.com/products/pdf-belemnite-dress-digital-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">Belemnite pattern</a> late last year, I was smitten. The 70s aesthetic, statement sleeves, relaxed fit-and-flare shape, the midi length - what's not to like? I had a long length of medium weight chambray in my stash, plus a matching zip and thread so no additional purchases needed. As part of my social media work for <a href="https://clothspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">ClothSpot</a>, Alice, Judy and myself each chose three garments for #makenine2020, a new year sewing community initiative started by <a href="https://luckylucille.com/" target="_blank">Rochelle of Lucy Lucille</a>. The Belemnite was one of mine, along with the <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2020/03/yay-trousers-at-last-m7455-palmer.html" target="_blank">completed McCalls M74445 wide-leg trousers</a> and the <a href="https://store.closetcasepatterns.com/products/cielo-top-dress-pattern-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Closet Case Cielo top</a> pattern (pics & post of that coming soon). </div>

I opted for view A. The sleeves are set-in flat with a single fabric piece for each sleeve which joins the front/back bodice sections. It's a really interesting construction method which works well with flat fell seams (how-to notes on these are included in the instructions) for a neat method that encloses the raw edges and adds topstitch detail. I made a size 3 grading to size 4 at the waist, matching my body measurements to the pattern. I made a couple of changes. Firstly I made a small, high round back alteration, just 1/4", using <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2015/10/factory-shirt-in-nani-iro-pon-pocho.html" target="_blank">this method</a>. It stops the front neck pulling back. I add this change to almost every bodice that I ever make! I also reduced the bust cup size as there is very little difference between my upper and full bust measurements. Marilla covers detailed small and full bust adjustments in the instructions and I followed these to the letter. They worked perfectly, the V lies flat with no gaping and the dress is an excellent fit.</div>

The belt is long enough to tie at the front or back- there's a slight change in look with each tie style. I did toy with the idea of adding pockets but left them this time as I wasn't quite sure of the skirt's fullness. I might add them to the next Belemnite. The skirt deserves a special mention. I love the lantern shape, subtle and much more economical use of fabric than long a-line skirt pieces. I like the midi-length too. It's a very wearable dress. I wore it to <a href="https://www.thestitchfestival.co.uk/" target="_blank">The Stitch Festival</a> which feels like many moons ago but instead was at the end of February. I've been wearing it at home on lockdown and its a comfortable wear which makes me feel like I'm making an effort, especially on my daily walk, and not just living in yoga pants. I would like to try the button-down front option with shorter sleeves so I have a dress to wear indoors in warmer weather, and outdoors when that time comes...I have a long length of Liberty lawn which might just work...I have loved Marilla's instructions and her pattern drafting so I am tempted to try more of her patterns, maybe the Maya top next?</div>

The embroidered words have never been truer, these are times for being kind and keeping going. Routines have changed for us all and we're making the most of all the positives like getting out for quiet walks every day. Although we're in an urban location, it's close to lots of green areas and a river so we get out each morning, walk Joni and enjoy spring carrying on regardless.</div>

This variety is called 'Early Foxtrot' and each day the pink deepens slightly, very pretty. Our daughter is home with us, returned from university a couple of weeks ago and she's been baking so we have something to enjoy with morning coffee when we get together from various home working, study and other tasks. These oat and cinnamon vegan cookies are from <a href="https://www.noracooks.com/vegan-oatmeal-cookies/" target="_blank">Nora Cook's website,</a> we skipped the icing, they didn't need it and the flaxseed egg replacement works really well. </div>

Some sewing is happening but it is erratic. My concentration is patchy. I am concentrating on exercising, getting my dopamine hit from <a href="https://www.thebodycoach.com/blog/pe-with-joe-1254.html" target="_blank">Joe Wicks,</a> plus some <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSaqFIF2tfKec9iLCkBU2cQ" target="_blank">yoga</a> from a friend putting her local classes online for the first time, walking, finishing work tasks and sewing when the mood takes me. I dip in and out of 'news' and removed my radio from my bedside table- I've had a radio next to my bed for over 30 years. Instead, I downloaded <a href="https://www.calm.com/" target="_blank">the Calm app </a> (it has a 7-day free trial) and I listen to various non-fiction soporific narratives to send me to sleep. If I wake up at 4am, which can be the case, I listen to another and I either return to slumber or it stops my mind racing. Otherwise, I'm keeping on, keeping on. I've sewn some clothes and quilts that I'll be sharing shortly. The embroidered hoop pattern is from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/597124227/show-up-pdf-embroidery-pattern?ga_search_query=pdf&ref=shop_items_search_2&crt=1" target="_blank">Cozy Blue</a> by the way. Meanwhile, sending love to you all xxx</div>

Welcome to my turn on the lovely Jo Avery's New Patchwork & Quilting Basics book tour! I've known Jo since the Fat Quarterly retreat days and she is such a vibrant person buzzing with ideas and creativity. Her book is a slice of Jo Avery, packed full of tips and advice from beginner to the more experienced quilter. I've also taken a few of Jo's classes at the Threadhouse Retreats and she is a great teacher, always looking for a more efficient way of doing things or simplifying a process so it's in reach of all abilities and the same approach can be seen throughout her skills-builder book. Packed full of quick methods for maximum impact, She's a whizz with colour and it shines throughout the bright and colourful pages.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a block from the Bedding Plants Quilt- my favourite project and the culmination of all the skills and techniques covered in the book. I rummaged through my vintage scraps to find lots of bright prints for the on-point tulip blocks. The instructions are clear and efficient, Jo's naturally encouraging tone comes through. She emphasis accepting momentary imperfections and moving on so you can see the bigger picture, sage advice! </div>

M7445 Palmer Pletsch Wide Leg Pant in Denim<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have only one pair of trousers in my wardrobe, <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2014/02/annie-hall-deer-and-doe-chataigne-meet.html" target="_blank">these dating from 2014</a>. I don't have any jeans- I know, it's weird. But I hate the feel of a skinny jean, I don't do much in the way of clothes shopping and when I go to the beach or dog walking, I usually put on joggers or yoga pants. I have had a longing for a comfortable stylish pair of denim wide-leg trousers and I have been looking out for a pattern. I'd see <a href="http://whatkatiesews.net/m7445-the-second-and-third/" target="_blank">Katie of What Katies Sews</a> reporting on a couple of pairs, and <a href="https://www.dreamcutsew.com/mccalls-7445-cropped-wide-leg-pants/" target="_blank">Diane of Dream Cut Sew</a> who had created a couple of gorgeous looking versions- both inspired me! As part of my social media work for <a href="https://clothspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Clothspot</a>, the team of owner Alice, accountant-in-chief Judy, and me are taking part in #makenine2020, we selected nine garments (three each) to make this year and McCalls 7445 is my first!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a Palmer Pletsch pattern which uses their tissue fitting method before cutting into any fabric. The aim is that any obvious alterations can be done to the tissue first. Large seam allowances are built in to provide extra fabric for fitting- on this pattern, the leg seams all feature 1" seam allowance.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The tissue fitting was a little hit and miss. It gave me a broad idea of length/width fit but once I moved on to the fabric, a 13oz denim with a little elastane for ease, it was a lot easier to feel how the final fit would be. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided I wanted the faced waist finish and moved the zip from the centre to the side. I also opted for a concealed zip. I cut a size 12 which was closest to my body measurements. I only needed minor adjustments,, a slight reduction of the crotch seam to reduce bagginess at the front, but I did machine baste the seams several times to get to that point! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To stop the waistline stretching out with all the trying on, I sewed a 3/8" woven black tape to the seam line for stability. When I did add the facing near the end of construction, it was quite a lot smaller and needed a lot of easing in. I also found the waist sat lower than I thought it would looking at the pattern images. I might add a waistband on a future pair.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like to make the insides comfortable to wear and pretty for me to look at so I bound the facing edges and the crotch seam with bias Liberty lawn strips and a Hong Kong finish, as well as adding a zipper tab cover.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The only other alteration was to take 7/8" off the length, I'm 5'5" tall. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCqS_MuykBFU5TO2509bxrlPOtslOR4tdxQnqZ2_QyTjZQjlbxX0RbEQEus4Wz7MmE1gFytqgm_JPUelloFRb8YpxtK-gs4IrDbNa6qPiPXL25EeZ7ep6v2kG9PXfDtab-ZQlOdEQXzLM/s1600/steps.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1149" data-original-width="1600" height="457" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCqS_MuykBFU5TO2509bxrlPOtslOR4tdxQnqZ2_QyTjZQjlbxX0RbEQEus4Wz7MmE1gFytqgm_JPUelloFRb8YpxtK-gs4IrDbNa6qPiPXL25EeZ7ep6v2kG9PXfDtab-ZQlOdEQXzLM/s640/steps.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I add a concealed/invisible zip, I've found life is a lot easier if I sew a double run of stitches. To prepare, I add lightweight interfacing strips to the wrong side of what will form the zipper seam, allow to cool and overlock the fabric edge. I then pin the first half of the zip in place and with a standard zipper foot, a long stitch and the outer edge of the zip just meeting the overlocker stitches and I sew the very edge of the zip to the seam fabric. One half of the zipper is now nicely secured so I change to the invisible zip foot and sew a second line of stitches close to the zipper teeth. Repeat on the other side. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They are exactly what I wanted. Denim, comfortable, stylish and incredibly wearable. I wasn't sure about the angled pocket initially but now it's one of my favourite features. The vertical opening section is stitched down to keep the pockets flat but still useable, plus I used lighter-weight denim for the facing to reduce bulk. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They fit into the much-worn category of my wardrobe already. My next pair are from this <a href="https://clothspot.co.uk/product/salthouse-dark-navy-blue-cotton-twill-fabric/" target="_blank">exceptional quality dark navy cotton twill</a> from Clothspot. It has a touch of elastane for ease just like the denim so I think it will work well. Yay for trouser success! I'm wearing this pair with a favourite striped version of the top from <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2015/05/she-wears-pants-japanese-sewing-book.html" target="_blank">'She Wears the Pants'</a>. </div>

I made this dress just in time for Christmas so I'm playing a little catch up here. It's the <a href="https://www.fibremoodshop.co.uk/pattern-holly-dress-pdf">Holly dress</a> from <a href="https://www.fibremoodshop.co.uk/">Fibre Mood</a>. I saw a few versions popping up on Instagram and I liked the winter-friendly style: long Bishop sleeves, high neck, midi length. Fibre Mood is based in Belgium and sell quarterly magazines (physical and digital) but also <a href="https://www.fibremoodshop.co.uk/Pdf-sewing-patterns-(A4-A0)">single PDF and paper patterns</a>. The PDF has overlapping pattern pieces so they need to be traced off and seam allowances have to be added too but I usually trace off anyway and fewer sheets to print means less to pay on the copy shop print- I use <a href="https://dottyprint.co.uk/">Dottyprint</a>. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut a size 36 based on my bust and hip measurements, then made my standard high round back adjustment and added 5/8" (1.5cm) seam allowances rather than the recommended 1cm so I had extra to play with. I did tweak the fit a little, the shoulders were snug at the back so I let the seam out 1/4" or so and graded that into the shoulder and underarm. I am quite narrow across the shoulder, I have read reviews where the shoulder width is commented on as being on the small size. Not much else needed changing. I stopped the zip at the neck seam (rather than ending at the top of the collar) and added a button and loop elastic sewn in the seam as I don't like constriction at the neck. The sleeves have a bias strip opening which is a finish I really like and enjoy sewing- quilters are used to narrow seams! Although the cuff looks like a button closure, the pearl buttons are just decorative- I used black snap fasteners from my vintage notions stash. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fabric is Liberty Tana cotton crepe (eBay purchase) in 'Mitsi' which has been waiting at least four years for the right pattern! It has good opacity and more drape than Liberty lawn. It's also easy to cut and sew with, but hard to find (<a href="https://www.alicecaroline.com/product-category/liberty-fabric/liberty-fabric-other/liberty-cotton-tana-crepe-liberty-fabric-other/">Alice Caroline currently has some</a>). For a similar weight and feel <a href="https://atelierbrunette.com/en/24-viscose-crepe">Atelier Brunette viscose crepe</a> is a good option. I had two metres and I just about squeezed the pattern out of the fabric (the belt was pieced at the end from the scraps) so there was minimal wastage. I wasn't sure this print was going to suit me whatever I chose to make with it but I've been surprised and loved wearing it. It's feminine without shouting Liberty! When I'm at home I leave the belt off and often wear it with a jumper but if I'm meeting someone or going out, it smartens up with the tie belt. There are no pockets and I don't think I would add them with this style, the skirt is not particularly full so pockets would be a bit bulky and maybe too visible with a crepe. I've seen the same pattern made up as a top too, great option! I like the modern Victorian vibe and that the lines are simple and not too fussy; I'm not into the frills and overlay skirt layers that are everywhere at the moment. Check out #fibremoodholly on Instagram to see lots of top and dress versions. </div>

I've been busy catching up with family, working (extra commission work that fell over late December) and creating presents for the festive period. I thought I'd share my makes now they've been gifted- click on any photo to see larger:<br />
<br />
Firstly a quilt-as-you-go gentle crazy cat lady cushion for my sister. All the prints were chosen for sentiment as well as colours and it elicited a shared understanding of why they were selected as it was opened which gave me an inner glow of happiness. This is a large cushion, 22" square with soft and squishy cushion form. This method takes a long time but the texture and end effect are worth it. There's an invisible zip across the top seam.<br />

Next, a requested cushion for my nephew. He likes one each year so has quite the collection and my design task is to include his name/initials otherwise, I have free rein. He is adventurous with colour which is tremendously helpful. This cushion started with the Cotton+Steel pop bottles and flowed from there using stash fabrics. The letters are from a fabulous Japanese alphabet patchwork book, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/485277859/moji-patchwork-alphabet-pattern-book" target="_blank">'Moji Patchwork' by Kumiko Fujita and Kazue Nakaima</a>. Amazon Japan, Yesasia or Etsy are the most likely places to find this title.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, my brother requested a denim apron. I've made quite a few aprons like Japanese cross-back designs and children's aprons so I really enjoyed this challenge. It's good quality denim in blue/black. The tape is cotton webbing traditionally used for finishing carpets. I found a series of apron designs that I liked online and fused my favourite elements to make a one-of-a-kind design. The top pocket is large enough for a phone and pen, the lower pockets can fit hands or a tea towel and the cross back ties threaded through bronze grommets give an adjustable fit. </div>

When it's been dry we've headed to the beach for breezy walks which is always my happy place. There have been other challenges as ever to deal with but ultimately I am grateful we are here with each other to start a new year. </div>

This is the correct sun, the one below was the wrong way up on the background! Fortunately, all the facial features were sewn to the text fabric only so a quick unpick, reposition and the mistake was remedied. </div>

I changed the face on this design, the rays are Sarah's original pattern. The appliqué features are all lawn fabric- they had to be for my sanity, those skinny seams! I'm now using Aurifil 80wt thread for all my appliqué now that I've got a good range of colours, the stitches really do disappear. I have two more animal border blocks and the corners to complete before all the blocks are sewn. I've started joining some sections so I can see it coming together! I'm aiming for a January finish...I'm just searching out a longarmer!</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I always have a mental wishlist of unbought patterns that I'm saving for when inspiration strikes. <a href="https://sewoverit.co.uk/product/lisa-comfort-magazine-issue-1/" target="_blank">The Sew Over It Cocoon Coat </a>has been on this list for a long while now and after starting work running the social media feeds at <a href="https://clothspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Clothspot</a> I found the perfect teddy bear fur fabric (now sold out), the pattern was in a Sew Over It sale and a plan came together! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj8EtaAmZHNMQWgxRF_epm2WR0HJD6E-DybitG7kiGsx0bFWjouS2xFbHNyZ_iTFvMz5zpIFwCLgTTvxqt0qx1j_y67KNnVd_WJ8m21PpJhJhvuq_xpW5WVhbazOg7Yx3tSQ6nGnINIVw/s1600/Cocooncoat3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj8EtaAmZHNMQWgxRF_epm2WR0HJD6E-DybitG7kiGsx0bFWjouS2xFbHNyZ_iTFvMz5zpIFwCLgTTvxqt0qx1j_y67KNnVd_WJ8m21PpJhJhvuq_xpW5WVhbazOg7Yx3tSQ6nGnINIVw/s640/Cocooncoat3.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've only sewn one coat, <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2017/04/jerseyprene-raw-edge-coat-makers-atelier.html" target="_blank">The Raw Edge Coat from The Maker's Atelier book</a> and it has been one of my favourite makes. It gets lots of wear and receives so many positive comments. The Cocoon coat is a similar silhouette, I really like the higher neck and I don't have a stylish winter coat- there's a lot of rain in the Southwest so last time I bought a coat I prioritised waterproofing and a hood!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHCH4CHvML0BzEruz9WTNgRFoi24hyphenhyphenMqhPoWWr5I4vaw4N2FM488O65tTml9WLcXDPNqwt_aAG34baG2qWsmepbqRUXM-ewTpCJ1tGCgDvuZ-aUMPQcBIHHcwJ3DRmduoU-AXGMGmI6kU/s1600/Cocooncoat1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHCH4CHvML0BzEruz9WTNgRFoi24hyphenhyphenMqhPoWWr5I4vaw4N2FM488O65tTml9WLcXDPNqwt_aAG34baG2qWsmepbqRUXM-ewTpCJ1tGCgDvuZ-aUMPQcBIHHcwJ3DRmduoU-AXGMGmI6kU/s640/Cocooncoat1.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a toile to check shoulder fit and pocket placement but the only alteration I needed made was adding a <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2015/10/factory-shirt-in-nani-iro-pon-pocho.html" target="_blank">high round back adjustment</a>, a standard change for me. Otherwise, I cut UK size 10, I'm between size 8 and 10 in Sew Over It so I went for the larger size to fit lots of warm layers underneath! The instructions are detailed, this coat started as a class at Sew Over It so it was well tested before becoming a pattern as part of Lisa Comfort's first magazine. The welt pockets are an extra addition and you do need to email Sew Over It to receive the instructions and pattern pieces. </div>
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlcKnVrPDlv64fT_MaHqFOf_8xaz7w7QxuDr9igv0PtKo9gNjPUK9umqanoY0Ki2rQp4p66nCZG4zwqoYZ7Dl1jkvDVpJavs8EREpb207h0Gl3W0Fz3Ab7KjNkHXzC72C8mAEEBnigqO0/s1600/Cocooncoat2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlcKnVrPDlv64fT_MaHqFOf_8xaz7w7QxuDr9igv0PtKo9gNjPUK9umqanoY0Ki2rQp4p66nCZG4zwqoYZ7Dl1jkvDVpJavs8EREpb207h0Gl3W0Fz3Ab7KjNkHXzC72C8mAEEBnigqO0/s640/Cocooncoat2.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Working with such a thick fabric was a challenge at times, especially on the collar and pockets. I spent a lot of time with spring-scissors clipping the pile back in seam allowances - so. The construction is best with a slow and steady approach. The collar for example needs careful sewing at the points, seam edges need to be rolled and coaxed into position and there is a fair bit of hand sewing required- to complete the collar, the hem and adding the lining. The sleeves are in two parts and there are lots of notches to match up and ease to fit in. I did find it slightly confusing as some of the notches are also marking important places like the top of the shoulder (I think a circle is often used for this on many commercial patterns) and working out where each notch matched up did take a while. Start with the double notch and the rest will fit with other notches and seam points.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwY2SFfeSPqRDZpf39kONxXUj6gvEfeDf08vXwIBbu4zFz3UvdiCiy7VD_n4eJaPkY8ReJT9GRsVrsha-vsZ_j-fOpweeiRGZ0Xa-e-a02mnfK0MNENhjPAMvyHr5EGkTRMomZd98jUHs/s1600/Cocooncoat4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwY2SFfeSPqRDZpf39kONxXUj6gvEfeDf08vXwIBbu4zFz3UvdiCiy7VD_n4eJaPkY8ReJT9GRsVrsha-vsZ_j-fOpweeiRGZ0Xa-e-a02mnfK0MNENhjPAMvyHr5EGkTRMomZd98jUHs/s640/Cocooncoat4.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Working with teddy fur and a satin lining was quite a contrast! I completed the lining first, cutting out with a rotary cutter, using a 70 microtex needle, lots of fine pins, a slow speed and <a href="https://ohsewcrafty.co.uk/various-sewing-tools/22133-clover-sewing-tailor-s-awl-tool-selection.html" target="_blank">a curved tailors awl </a>(my new favourite tool!). I finsihed the seams and hems with pinking shears to reduce fraying. For the coat outer, I cut out with scissors on the floor, switched to a walking foot and 90 needle and tailor's awl to help with the bulk. For some seams (setting the sleeve for example) Wonderclips were more easier than pins. I used a pressing cloth (silk organza or thin cotton) and steam for both fabrics as they are sensitive to heat and with the fur I also used a Tailor's Clapper. The fur needed a gentle approach though, too much steam makes the pile frizzy!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPuMkxD3Uro-0At90uXQzl-kP5b5EpuitlrXp2FdDJ3YSFDXClzBK9bz1OD29zCDkNkSMQAzMK7YVo_i1kzozighUzuCa6XT_oytZUQgpMCLPv2BNEoiUVBtkSqnDzjs1YCqB-ytOH3jU/s1600/Cocooncoat5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1143" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPuMkxD3Uro-0At90uXQzl-kP5b5EpuitlrXp2FdDJ3YSFDXClzBK9bz1OD29zCDkNkSMQAzMK7YVo_i1kzozighUzuCa6XT_oytZUQgpMCLPv2BNEoiUVBtkSqnDzjs1YCqB-ytOH3jU/s640/Cocooncoat5.jpeg" width="456" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pockets are a challenge with the fur, although the pile also camouflages any imperfections. After a little research I discovered pocketing fabric which is a densely woven cotton or cotton/poly blend that's especially hardwearing. I have an old waterproof coat of my husbands that I've harvested various fittings and fabrics from so I used the lining from that for my pockets and it made construciton so much easier than satin lining would've been!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmLdP7UKdgE7T9LUHmxqAaQL7R6Mx2rPH1yrWD_T23NOtWZs4VrFtG54EyOJ2p11IxKgdbn_Y8ruWtnrhzGCuZF-v7tzV5fqHC0oKn1QAtl2SrqKzw9781afjY36YrINEu5H6bY59atnM/s1600/Cocooncoat6.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmLdP7UKdgE7T9LUHmxqAaQL7R6Mx2rPH1yrWD_T23NOtWZs4VrFtG54EyOJ2p11IxKgdbn_Y8ruWtnrhzGCuZF-v7tzV5fqHC0oKn1QAtl2SrqKzw9781afjY36YrINEu5H6bY59atnM/s640/Cocooncoat6.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did find the outer edges of the coat needed some extra help to stay in place and stop the facing rolling to the outside, especially as I couldn't press as I would with a wool coat. I ended up sewing tiny hand stitches (like a stabby running stitch) along the outer edges up to the collar point. Not the best solution I suspect, but the stitches are hidden under the fur and it did the job. I have now also added a <a href="https://www.minervacrafts.com/shop/sewing/haberdashery/341830-m-prym-coloured-sew-on-metal-snap-fasteners?colour=Beige&size=25" target="_blank">fancy large snap</a> as a front closure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://sewoverit.co.uk/product/cocoon-coat-sewing-pattern/" target="_blank">The Cocoon Coat </a>is now available as a standalone PDF pattern at Sew Over It. </div>

It's been a busy few weeks, I'm just catching up with everything after the half-term break from my day job. This month has been dominated by a complicated health diagnosis for Joni. She has <a href="https://wagwalking.com/condition/renal-dysplasia" target="_blank">renal dysplasia.</a> This means her kidneys are not properly formed and are only 30% of the size they should be. It was a massive shock and we spent the first three weeks trying to establish a prescription diet and encourage her to eat. After a lot of stress, we've found a food she can eat and her most recent blood test has shown some improvement and a couple of things that need closer monitoring. It does impact heavily on looking after her- we can't use food treats with her so on longer walks, it's rare that we let her off the lead, she needs lots of water so more toilet breaks, she rarely sleeps through the night as a result. She is the most loving and lively of dogs and it can be hard to comprehend how complicated things are inside her. Our vet has been amazing, incredibly supportive and giving us positivity when we have needed it. At the moment she's happy and active, we're doing all we can for her. It has taken up a lot of time so whilst I have been sewing, I don't have much I can share here at the moment so I'll leave you with a few recent pics of her, she is a total joy.</div>

We were chatting about solids and she was selling the <a href="https://oliveandflohandcraft.co.uk/collections/art-gallery-solid-fabric-pure-elements" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Art Gallery Pure Elements solids</a> among the many prints on her stall. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sarahashfordstudio/?hl=en" target="_blank">Sarah Ashford</a> and I offered to make something from Pure Elements to showcase to how beautiful they are to work with as we all thought they were a range that can easily get looked over. As with all Art Gallery woven cotton, they are lighter weight than solids like Kona and have a silkier feel. We each chose four colours, Saira sent us a fat quarter of each and we got to work. This is what I came up with, The Make Stuff Zip Pouch.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The colours I worked with were: <a href="https://oliveandflohandcraft.co.uk/collections/art-gallery-solid-fabric-pure-elements/products/art-gallery-fabric-pure-elements-cozumel-blue" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Cozumel blue</a>, <a href="https://oliveandflohandcraft.co.uk/collections/art-gallery-solid-fabric-pure-elements/products/art-gallery-fabric-pure-elements-banana-cream" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Banana Cream</a>, <a href="https://oliveandflohandcraft.co.uk/collections/art-gallery-solid-fabric-pure-elements/products/art-gallery-fabric-pure-elements-crystal-pink" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Crystal Pink</a> and <a href="https://oliveandflohandcraft.co.uk/collections/art-gallery-solid-fabric-pure-elements/products/art-gallery-fabric-pure-elements-white-linen" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">White Linen.</a> I thought these made a summery happy combination, the sort of colours I like to look at all year round and especially when it's not summer! I recently had a birthday and my husband bought me lots of Aurifil appliqué threads and I knew I wanted a zip pouch like this to put them in. I drafted the letters as a starting point and then turned to a beautiful Courthouse Steps Sewing Bag that <a href="http://sewtakeahike/" target="_blank">Penny (Sewtakeahike)</a> made me a from some amazing embroidered silk. I treasure it and use to keep my small 50wt Aurifil spools neatly organised and all in one place. The pattern she used was from <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Natural-Patchwork-Stylish-Projects-Inspired/dp/1590308816/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Suzuko+koseki&qid=1570394302&sr=8-2" target="_blank">Natural Patchwork</a> by Suzuko Koseki. I remembered a similar one in <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Patchwork-Style-Simple-Projects-Colorful/dp/159030649X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Suzuko+koseki&qid=1570394269&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Patchwork Style</a>, the first of her books that I bought many years ago and still love to look through. I adapted the pattern diagrams with a combination of instinct and fudging and made it work with the foundation paper pieced text, double zip and the thread spools. The big bonus of Pure Elements is that even with the tiny piecing where 1/4" seams end up layered upon each other, the bulk is reduced and there's no lumpiness. The front and back bag panels are layered with batting and lining and quilted. I also used Pure Elements for the top and side sections(with a single layer of fusible interfacing), as well as the handles panel lining. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm so pleased with the pouch, it's just how I imagined. I didn't sketch it out, instead, I relied on the image in my mind's eye and kept on going until it worked! The prints were from a <a href="https://oliveandflohandcraft.co.uk/products/scrap-bag?_pos=1&_sid=3216b6e72&_ss=r" target="_blank">scrap bag</a> I bought from Saira and my own scraps. The inside seam was finished with some vintage pre-made bias binding and sewn on in one pass. It could be neater- the corners are so tricky with this shape- but it passes even my critical eye. The double pull zip was in my stash, you can find similar at <a href="https://rosegardenpatchwork.co.uk/" target="_blank">Rose Garden Patchwork</a>, it helps with the opening and access on a project like this. Thank you Saira for providing the fabrics for this project, I'm very happy that I get to keep this one! Keep a lookout for what Sarah does with hers too, I'm looking forward to seeing...</div>

I've been trying to keep up with my Simple Folk quilt (<a href="https://www.sarahfielkeblockofmonth.com/bom-2018.html" target="_blank">Sarah Fielke's Block of the month 2018</a>) whilst returning to my term-time work schedule, sorting out family stuff like the daughter returning to Uni and a new role doing some social media work for <a href="https://clothspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Clothspot,</a> a gem of an online garment-making fabric shop. Much of my sewing for this has been rather repetitive (the centre circles and leaves of the spacer blocks) as well as the eight leaf garland border blocks, but for a treat, I work on the animals as well!</div>

Sarah's drafting of the animals really is excellent and I just love finding fabrics for them all. I'm digging deep into my lawn scraps and I was recently given a lovely lawn bundle of pieces by Valerie from my <a href="https://southwestmqg.co.uk/" target="_blank">local Modern Quilt Guild</a> which I'll be using wherever I can on the remaining animals. Lawn really does make a huge difference in reducing fraying and bulk and making the little zigs and zags of the horse's mane and the rabbit's tail. The end is some way off but definitely in view!</div>

I tried to resist the <a href="https://shopwiksten.com/products/womens-modern-shift-dress-top-sewing-pattern">Wiksten Shift Dress pattern</a>, it was all over social media a few months ago and I wait to see if it's just a passing fancy or a style I think will suit me as well as a style I would actually make, wear and enjoy. I recently updated my desktop computer and as I saved files and swapped data over, I could see many PDF patterns that I've bought and never sewn. In the end, I'd seen so many people on Instagram looking great in the midi dress version that I bought it as a PDF. It is pricey (another reason I was resisting) but now I've made two, I can see why. It is deceptively simple, but carefully and thoughtfully designed. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a size 0. I ummed and ahhed between sizes 0 and 2 and as soon as I cut the PDF pattern out and did some measuring, I could see that the smallest size would be the best match. I'm 5'5" and my measurements fell between sizes 0 and 2. There are detailed size recommendations and examples <a href="https://shopwiksten.com/blogs/news/shift-dress-top-sewing-pattern-choosing-your-size">here.</a> On the dress, the back section under the yoke is gathered to create the extra volume- that gives the dress it's movement and ease when walking so there's no sense of restriction. The dress front is much narrower so creates more of a column effect when viewed from the front. I made a couple of changes- I did the <a href="https://shopwiksten.com/blogs/news/shift-hack-forward-shoulder-adjustment">forward 1/2" shoulder adjustment </a>from the Wiksten journal (on my second, I also made a <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2015/10/factory-shirt-in-nani-iro-pon-pocho.html">small high round back adjustment</a> of a scant 3/8" which stopped the neckline falling back at all). My sleeves are about 1/2" too as I accidentally lopped 1/2" off the paper pattern when sorting the shoulder adjustment out! I corrected this for the next dress! I also added some interfacing to the waist tie, just a small section along the centre back- it adds a little more body to the area that lies against that part of your body (see pic below)...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Top sewing tip coming up: I added a bar (from small hook and bar fastenings) on the inside of each split, right at the top (example below is on dress two). This adds some strength to a vulnerable area and it has worked well as I've worn both dresses a lot with no wear on the splits.</div>

Otherwise, everything else is as the pattern stated. I used a double gauze that I bought from Stitch at a show. This had a standard gauze front layer and a loose weave underlayer which meant it frayed like crazy! But it is soft, opaque and quite drapey so it suits the style well. </div>

Like Jenny's other patterns, the design is timeless and there is a top option (the back narrower) which I can see myself making too. I have worn this version and the second (in Nani Iro Bird's Eye double gauze) so many times that buying the pattern has definitely paid off. I took both dresses to London for a weekend away last month and they were perfect for travel. I could roll them up in a holdall on the train and then happily wear them for a day of sightseeing or with a close-fitting cardigan for meals out in the evening. A classic summer into sunny autumn dress!</div>

I liked the look of the Liesl+Co Gelato dress since it first came out a couple of months ago. There are a number of simple, shift style dress patterns that have been released recently: <a href="https://oliverands.com/shop/digital-gelato-blouse-dress-sewing-pattern.html" target="_blank">Gelato Blouse and Dress</a>, <a href="https://shopwiksten.com/products/womens-modern-shift-dress-top-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">Wiksten Shift Dress and Top</a>, and <a href="https://store.closetcasepatterns.com/products/cielo-top-dress-pattern-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Closet Case Cielo top/dress</a>. I was very tempted by the Wiksten but I think it's too boxy for my frame and will look shapeless unless tightly sashed. I liked the neckline on the Gelato and the welt pocket detail, as well as the long sleeve top option and Liesl always writes impeccable instructions, plus the closer fitting shoulders tend to look better on me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found a paper pattern on eBay and made a toile- a top with a long sleeve, short sleeve and frill to test fit. I made size 2 which matched my chest measurement. The fit was a tiny bit tight across the chest and back just next to the armscye, a pulling and restrictive feeling. So, I consulted <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/FIT-REAL-PEOPLE-2ND-Clothes/dp/0935278656/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2OU0C4EP3B7WN&keywords=fit+for+real+people&qid=1562960460&s=gateway&sprefix=fit+for+area%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-2" target="_blank">Fit for Real People</a> and also found a couple of Threads videos; <a href="https://www.threadsmagazine.com/2016/01/25/video-how-to-modify-sleeves-for-better-arm-mobility" target="_blank">How to Modify Sleeves for Better Arm Mobility</a> and <a href="https://www.threadsmagazine.com/2016/02/19/video-adjusting-a-sleeve-for-a-forward-shoulder" target="_blank">Correct a Pattern for Foward Shoulder</a>. I didn't remake my toile although I wished I had in hindsight, but I did make some changes. I altered the sleeve cap pattern to make it a shallower curve (as in the first Threads video). This added extra material on either side and raised the lower curve of armseye on the dress front and back by 3/8" at the I also reshaped the cap for a forward shoulder following the second video and adjusted the shoulder seams adding 1/4" to the back and subtracting the same at the back.</div>

The result is nearly but not quite right as you can see on some of the pictures- there's some lines and folds around the sleeve head/arm hole that indicate the fit is a little off. But I have worn the dress a lot and some features like the pocket and the overall shape, I love. I just need to really nail the sleeves! The bust days and length are without alteration so do consider that the cup size is small on this dress (I'm an A/B cup at most). The pocket construction needs to be slow and methodical as it needs to be symmetrical and balanced.</div>

I used a Tula Pink cotton sateen that was originally designed as a quilt backing so was super wide at 108". I only had a short length so the grain was rotated 90 degrees to fit the pattern pieces and I had to work the best I could to balance the birds across my body. Sateen can be a little tricky to work with- all those floating threads which snag really easily- but it is soft and silky to wear. I had similar fit niggles after I made my <a href="https://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2014/10/liesl-and-co-cinema-dress-with-queen.html" target="_blank">Liesl+Co Cinema dress</a> which I only realised when I was wearing it, so I'm thinking that the block Liesl uses isn't quite right for my upper body. I've got a couple of other shift style dresses (<a href="https://store.closetcasepatterns.com/products/cielo-top-dress-pattern-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Closet Case Ceilo</a> and <a href="https://mavenpatterns.co.uk/the-french-dart-shift/" target="_blank">Maven patterns French Dart</a>) so I'll be interested to see how those sleeves compare. </div>

September 1st, meteorological summer is over and the old workday routine is about to kick in but right now the sun is shining, I've caught up with family over the weekend and life is good so I'd thought I'd share my latest completed <a href="https://www.sarahfielkeblockofmonth.com/bom-2018.html" target="_blank">Simple Folk block of the month (2018)</a> and a Sunday Selection of stitchy links.</div>

I've also be working on the eight garland/leaf blocks and preparing more animal blocks. The rooster is dressed in the finest Liberty lawn plus some Robert Kaufman Carolina lawn and a Suzuko Koseki buttons print. The lawn is my go to for tiny pieces and pointy/skinny strips- it just makes life a lot easier! <br />

There are a multitude of Sewing-themed September photohops on Instagram just kicking off My heart lies of course with #GreatBritishQuilter although this year I'm no longer hosting with Sarah Ashford, the lovely<a href="https://www.instagram.com/charmaboutyou/?hl=en" target="_blank"> Lucy Brennan</a> is guest hosting with <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sarahashfordstudio/?hl=en" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sarah</a> and I'm taking part along with all the other quilty participants. You don't need to be British to take part- just a lover of British quilting- and the prompt sheet is available <a href="https://www.sarahashfordstudio.com/gb-quilter" target="_blank">here.</a> If you want to double up or take part in a garment making photohop instead, <a href="https://www.thenewcrafthouse.com/" target="_blank">Hannah and Rosie at The New Craft House</a> are running #sewyourselfsustainable with a focus on sustainable sewing which you can post on daily or dip in and out of. There's also #seweverydayseptember hosted by Sheona of <a href="https://www.sewisfaction.co.uk/" target="_blank">sewisfaction.co.uk</a>, a challenge designed to encourage, inspire and motivate you to sew everyday even if just for 10 minutes.</div>

I've just got a new desktop- I don't like using a laptop and my old iMac was at breaking point so I bought a new one in a sale and I've been setting up new desktop images and sorting/clearing out all my old files from the last eight years. It was a reminder of how much has changed in the online sewing world. I went through all my old bookmarks and so many websites are no longer running, so many bloggers have finished blogging, websites no longer exist. Such is life, constant change. It did make me wonder what's coming next...meanwhile, I found a <a href="http://www.rae-ritchie.com/blog/2019/8/25/september-calendar" target="_blank">beautiful monthly Desktop calendar image by Rae Ritchie</a>. </div>

I've made lots of dresses over the summer, all in the blogging queue and one of them involved lots of armscye sleeve/armhole fiddling around. Gina of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ginareneedesigns/?hl=en" target="_blank">@ginareneedesigns</a> shares the best mini videos and photo tips on Instagram including several recent posts about shoulder and armscye fitting, they are so helpful. <a href="https://www.ginareneedesigns.com/" target="_blank">She also has a website with lots of very cute looking patterns too.</a></div>

I've just had the chance to review a lovely book that I've spotted coming on Instagram from talented author/designer <a href="http://fabricmutt.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Heidi Staples</a> <a href="https://www.instagram.com/fabricmutt/?hl=en" target="_blank">@fabricmutt</a>. She has such a cute zakka-style aesthetic and is always very generous sharing <a href="http://fabricmutt.blogspot.com/p/tutorials.html" target="_blank">free patterns/tutorials on her blog</a>. <a href="https://luckyspool.com/collections/books/products/patchwork-usa" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Patchwork USA: 24 Projects For Your Handmade Journey</a> is a road-trip inspired book of makes from the quick 'daytrip' style coasters, snap shot needlebook, to 'weekend getaways' e.g. Hobby Kit, Color book and finally longer projects- 'Summer Vacation'- like quilts and pillows. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is a very pretty book to look through, the photography is so nicely done- clear, cute and with a lot of vintage props! All the makes are straightforward, there's only one pattern piece which is a corner rounding template, and the enjoyment is in fabric selection and fussy cutting. It's also a hardback so as it stays open easily and feels extra good in my hands! Let's take a look through first, then I'll show you what I made!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The opening pages are the usual tools and techniques and this is where you refer back to when making a zipper pouch, hand sewing hexagons etc. Heidi's thoughts on fabric combinations are excellent and especially helpful if you get stuck putting fabrics together to achieve a particular look or using certain colours or prints. It's very well written and easy to understand with lots of tips and tricks.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The projects all feature some little extra text touches. There's a <b>Historical Marker</b> note telling the story behind the project. Design tips come under <b>Scenic Route</b> and <b>Rotary Club</b> lists the fabric and cutting requirements. Some projects have a Tour Guide section with helpful hints and also a <b>Detour </b>for any project variations. I made the Penny Pouch, more about that later!</div>
